Finding Surface Correspondences Using Symmetry Axis Curves
نویسندگان
چکیده
In this paper, we propose an automatic algorithm for finding a correspondence map between two 3D surfaces. The key insight is that global reflective symmetry axes are stable, recognizable, semantic features of most real-world surfaces. Thus, it is possible to find a useful map between two surfaces by first extracting symmetry axis curves, aligning the extracted curves, and then extrapolating correspondences found on the curves to both surfaces. The main advantages of this approach are efficiency and robustness: the difficult problem of finding a surface map is reduced to three significantly easier problems: symmetry detection, curve alignment, and correspondence extrapolation, each of which has a robust, polynomial-time solution (e.g., optimal alignment of 1D curves is possible with dynamic programming). We investigate of this approach on a wide range of examples, including both intrinsically symmetric surfaces and polygon soups, and find that it is superior to previous methods in cases where two surfaces have different overall shapes but similar reflective symmetry axes, a common case in computer graphics.

Any Pair of 2D Curves Is Consistent with a 3D Symmetric Interpretation
Symmetry has been shown to be a very effective a priori constraint in solving a 3D shape recovery problem. Symmetry is useful in 3D recovery because it is a form of redundancy. There are, however, some fundamental limits to the effectiveness of symmetry. Specifically, given two arbitrary curves in a single 2D image, one can always find a 3D mirror-symmetric interpretation of these curves under ...
متن کاملSymmetry in Image Registration and Deformation Modeling
We survey the role of symmetry in diffeomorphic registration of landmarks, curves, surfaces, images and higher-order data. The infinite dimensional problem of finding correspondences between objects can for a range of concrete data types be reduced resulting in compact representations of shape and spatial structure. This reduction is possible because the available data is incomplete in encoding...

Receiver operating characteristic (ROC) curves have application in analysis of the performance of diagnostic indicators used in the assessment of disease risk in clinical and veterinary medicine and in crop protection. متن کاملLocalization of 3D lines from single images using off-axis catadioptric cameras
The reconstruction of 3D scenes constituted by straight lines can find many applications both in Computer vision and in Mobile robotics. Most approaches to 3D reconstruction analyze several images, which need the determination of the correspondences between the used images. This paper studies the localization of straight lines in 3D space from single 2D images, acquired by a noncentral catadiop...
